Plant Breeding is defined as the science of changing the genetic traits of the plants in order to create the desired plant types that are better suited for cultivation, gives better yield and have good resistance to diseases.
Plant breeding technology incorporates many traits:
- Increased tolerance to insect pests.
- Increased resistance to pathogens
- Increased tolerance to environmental stresses such as salinity, extreme temperatures, drought and frost
- Improved quality
- Increased crop yield
What is Hybridization?
Craigieburn nursery breeds closely related plants that are genetically different to produce a hybrid offspring. Scientist such as Gregor Mendel and Charles Darwin developed this process and many plant breeders later improved it.
Plant breeding is a systematic process. The entire process of plant breeding starts from choosing the desirable qualities of the plant to the final product which is broadly divided into 5 steps.
1. Collection of Variability
A particular plant species has different varieties depending on which part of the region it is growing in; each variety will have a different set of traits and this differentiation of a variety of a plant in the same species is called genetic variation.
For example, there are about 121 natural variants of ragi on this planet. Each one of them is different from the other by few traits such as some are resistant to bugs, and give low yield, others are drought resistant and give a high yield. To create a new high quality of Ragi, it would be better if scientist knew about all the variation of Ragi and their traits, to select the best traits to create a new hybrid.
2. Evaluation and Selection of Parents
Craigieburn nursery collects the varieties based on easily distinguishable characteristics such as medium inflorescence, big kernel, thin stem, etc. However, plant variation can be due to the environmental conditions which are temporary.
For example, if a dwarf plant collected from a drought region when grown under normal circumstances grows tall then dwarfism is not actually a trait. In order, to avoid such errors careful evaluation and characterization are required to know about the composition of the germplasm and the diversity of the given crop. Before the plants are selected, they are tested for pureness. Plants which have more than one allele are called heterozygous, such plants are rejected and only pure plants or homozygous plants are subjected to further study.
3. Cross-hybridization among the selected parents
Craigieburn nursery selects the pureline parents from the desired characteristics that are cross-hybridized. It helps to produce hybrid progeny which further helps to bring desired traits from different plant lines into one plant line.
For example, if we crossbred, a low yielding, high disease resistance ragi plant with high yielding, low disease resistance ragi plant since the parent plants crosslined are pure the F1 hybrid ragi plant obtained will have a high yield and high disease resistance. This tendency of hybrids to obtain superior characteristics of both parents is known as heterosis or hybrid vigour.
4. Selection and testing of superior recombinants
The hybrid obtained is scientifically checked for desired characters and if the test is passed the plants are self-pollinated for several generations. Since F1 hybrid has both dominant as well as recessive alleles at every next generation we will get a wide variety of combinations, desirable and undesirable. The undesirable combinations are eliminated and the process is continued for 7-8 generations until uniformity or homozygosity is obtained, creating a pureline where characters don’t segregate forming a pureline called as cultivars.
5. Multiplication of improved seeds
The seeds of the approved cultivars are multiplied by growing them in suitable conditions. The seeds are then tested for quality and certified by National Seed Corporation NSC. The certified seeds are then distributed to farmers and license seed sellers.

Indoor plants or houseplants have major health benefits:
- Reduced chances of illness and disease
- Enhances concentration and focus
- Improves mood levels
- Purifies the air
- Increases awareness
Here are several benefits of houseplants:
1. Plants eliminate harmful toxins
Plants are natural air purifiers where they eliminate or reduce the toxicity from the atmosphere. A popular study by NASA proves that toxic chemicals in the air can affect our health negatively and it has been linked to high levels of stress and anxiety. Greenvale plant nursery provides houseplants that can take in carbon dioxide and toxins and emit more oxygen, hence, cleansing the atmosphere.
2. The green colour is soothing
“Green, which is nature’s colour, is restful, soothing, cheerful, and health-giving.” – Paul Brunton. The green colour is invariably associated with nature. Surrounding yourself with the green has shown to improve the blood pressure, lower stress levels and decrease anxiety. People who have a green working environment have increased attentiveness, increased productivity, higher job satisfaction.

Plants with amazing anti-anxiety benefits
Jasmine, a shrub, not only has a mesmerising fragrance but it is also known to promote better quality sleep. When surrounded by Jasmine, you will feel less anxious, aggravated and more at peace.
Lavender is another plant that helps you sleep better. Lavender is shown to reduce stress levels dramatically. One whiff of lavender before going to sleep and you will dream of fairy tales and unicorns. It is also shown to reduce headaches, skin irritations, and swellings.
Succulents are not only pretty to look at but come with lots of health benefits. Have a headache, feeling fatigued, stressed or anxious consider planting some succulents and keeping them around you. There are any numbers of succulents to choose from, they require minimal care and attention. Immerse the succulents fully in water and let the water run through the drainage hole. Be sure to water your plant only when the soil is dry.
When you have some extra backyard space and don’t know what to do with it, the most obvious answer would be to start a garden.
But did you know there are an array of options to choose from apart from the obvious choices?
Nurseries near you offer different kinds of plants and accessorize to make your backyard look attractive.
Okay, I agree, this is the most obvious choice on the list but planting a vegetable garden is very rewarding and beneficial. They are fun to maintain, you reap what you sow, unlike some gardens which are planted only for aesthetic appeal. You cannot sustain your entire family by growing vegetables in your backyard but you can reasonably reduce the strain on your pocket by planting tomatoes, sweet potatoes, etc. vegetables used in daily life.
If you are a beginner it is advisable to plant vegetables that require less monitoring and care and once you grow in confidence you can take on vegetables that are more difficult to cultivate.
The other option for gardening is a flower garden. Almost everyone is appreciative of flowers and they are aesthetically very appealing. What is more fun with flowers, you have a myriad of options to choose from. There are ten thousand, if not millions, of different flower gardens you can possibly come up with. Some people have dedicated gardens for a particular type of flower, for example, rose, sunflower, orchids, tulips, etc. Other gardens are rather a mixed combination of flowers which can be an aphrodisiac of visual imagery.
It is said herbs are the easiest plants to grow in the world, either in the garden or in containers. Previously, herbs were planted for medicinal purpose but today’s modern herb gardens are used for entirely different purposes. You guessed it. They are used in cooking to add flavour to dishes and enhance them. Planting your own herb garden will ensure you will never be out of fresh and organic herbs. You can add these herbs to your favourite pasta dishes and other exotic dishes. It will be a proud moment when you will be able to use herbs such as basil, fennel, dill, parsley, rosemary, mint from your backyard and incorporate them into your dishes. Nurseries near you offer all kinds of herbs to get you started.
This is the most expensive garden to build on the list but hear me out! The reason they are expensive is you are literally building a home for your plants and with good reason because you can control the temperature, sunlight of those plants and grow them effectively. This method is adopted when under normal circumstances you can’t grow them or they aren’t in the season anymore. Greenhouse garden is mostly built by farmers and gardening aficionados but if this option has really piqued your interest then there are mini-greenhouse areas at the nurseries near you that make the greenhouse gardens relatively easy to use and affordable
There are many options to choose from, so, go with your gut, do your research, make a plan and in few months, you will have a beautiful garden to look at where you can enjoy a cup of tea without any interruption.
